Kangtuo Fm

Period:
Cretaceous, Paleogene

Age Interval:
Paleocene-Eocene, E1-E2, (8e)

Province:
Xizang (Tibet)

Type Locality and Naming

The holostratotype is the Kangtuoxishan Road Section (N32°25′00″; E84°15′00″), Gaize County, Tibet Autonomous Region. The parastratotype is the Dakouzi Section, Chabu Town, Gaize County, Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet). Naming and both sections were measured by the Regional Geological Survey Brigade of Tibet in 1986.

Lithology and Thickness

The Kangtuo Formation contains mainly purplish-red, followed by variegated sandstone, conglomerate, mudstone and siltstone, interbedded with basic volcanic rocks at the bottom. Turtle cracks, insect tracks and ripple marks are common in the upper mudstone. The thickness ranges from 300 m to 2700 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Kangtuo Formation unconformably overlies the Rigongla Gr (Rigongla Fm) and conformably overlies the Cretaceous Abushan Fm.

Upper contact

The Kangtuo Formation is unconformably overlaid by the Suonahu Fm and the Yulinshan Fm.

Regional extent

Kangtuo, Gaize County, Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Kangtuo Formation is coeval (synonymous) with the Ashikule Gr, the Longmenka Gr and Shiquanhe Gr and the Shuanghu Gr (the Shuanghu Lower Fm corresponds to the lower Kangtuo Fm and the Shuanghu Upper Fm corresponds to the upper Kangtuo Fm).

Fossils

The Kangtuo Formation yielded ostracods and pollen fossils.

Age

In 2006, the Guizhou Geological Survey Institute obtained 65.1-66.5Ma isotopic ages from the andesite, and found Paleogene charophytes, etc., which changed the age from Neogene to Paleogene (Yue Long and Shiyong Mou et al., 2006). "Conformable on Abushan Fm" => might begin in upper Maastrichian?
